Video footage shows Hilliard man working while receiving workers’ comp

Columbus – A Hilliard (Franklin County) man was sentenced July 22 in the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas on one count of workers’ compensation fraud, a fifth-degree felony. William Rausch pleaded guilty to the charge on the same day.

“Surveillance footage can provide strong evidence that a claimant, a medical provider or an employer committed workers’ compensation fraud,” said BWC Administrator/CEO Steve Buehrer. “In this instance, the photographs and video footage clearly show that Mr. Rausch was working while receiving a type of benefit reserved for claimants who cannot work at all.”

SID received an allegation that Rausch worked at a family member’s business while receiving workers’ compensation benefits. Investigators captured pictures and video footage showing Rausch working as a welder while collecting temporary total disability benefits. Claimants are not permitted to work while receiving this type of benefit. Investigators learned that Rausch worked as a welder from September 2010 to October 2012 for a family member’s business while collecting that type of benefit.

Rausch was sentenced to 10 months at the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, but the sentence was suspended for three years of community control. Rausch was ordered to pay $25,000 in restitution to BWC.

Surveillance footage from the case is available here. A picture of Rausch is available here.
